Providence Day junior guards Devon Dotson and Trey Wertz helped the Chargers stop Bishop Sullivan 80-76 in overtime at the Phenom Hoops National Showcase in Greensboro Friday.
The Chargers trailed most of the game before making a late surge. Wertz made two free throws with 9.1 seconds left to give his team a 3-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Bishop Sullivan’s Michael Barfield Owens made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime. In overtime, Providence Day (1-0) grabbed an early advantage and held on for the win.

Dotson finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. He shot 73 percent from the floor. Wertz had 29 points, four rebounds and two assists. He shot 55 percent from the floor. Another Providence Day junior, Isaac Suffren, had 13 points and drew three key chargers for Providence Day, which got big minutes from senior Ben Ferris after its starting center, 6-foot-6 freshman Jacolbe Cowan, left the game with a separated shoulder in the third quarter.
Providence Day will play Wilson’s Greenfield School Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Greenfield features North Carolina recruit Coby White, a 6-5 junior point guard.
