Not our day': RMA falls to C.B. Aycock
• By Jim Green Sports Editor

C.B. Aycock scored multiple runs over several innings and went on to defeat Rocky Mount Academy 11-2 in the second game on day two of the Golden Leaf Invitational Tournament at Fleming Stadium in Wilson on Tuesday.

“It was just not our day today. We couldn’t catch a break,” said Eagles head coach Cameron Ramsey, whose squad fell to 10-3 overall.

C.B. Aycock (13-4 overall) got off to a quick start with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
With one out, Logan Lawhorn walked and Dalton Smith singled. Lawhorn scored when Austin Booth lined a shot off the glove of the RMA right fielder. Tyler Horton, the courtesy runner for Smith, came in on a fielder’s choice, and a walk to D.J. Madrigal placed runners on first and third. Madrigal intentionally got caught and was tagged out in a rundown, allowing Austin Dilda to score the fourth run.

The Eagles had some baserunning issues beginning in the second inning, when Kameron Wright led off with an infield single but was picked off of first base by CBA pitcher Carson Gipson.
The Falcons added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning on a walk to Horton, who stole second and scored on a bloop single by Cameron Aycock, and Lawhorn followed with a single to left to put runners on first and third with no outs.

Smith grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that brought in Aycock, making it 6-0.

The Falcons turned an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play after Parker Sherrod walked with one out in the top of the third.

Aycock then tacked on another run in the bottom of the third frame when Gipson doubled home Cameron Dearing (who had walked and moved up when Brandon Godwin reached on an error). RMA starting pitcher Miller Rogers exited and reliever Seth Tickel garnered two groundouts and a strikeout to end the inning.

RMA showed signs of life offensively in the top of the fourth by plating a pair of runs.

Gabe Winham led off with a single and scored when Jordan Wright ripped a triple to right field. Wright scored the Eagles’ second run when Kameron Wright grounded out to short. Luke Holloman walked but was picked off.

C.B. Aycock then collected its final four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Smith singled, Booth walked and Dearing singled to load the bases. One run scored on a passed ball and the second crossed on a wild pitch. A walk to Godwin and a single by Gipson brought in the third run, and two batters later, Aycock’s single to center plated Godwin to make it 11-2. The Falcons threatened to end it via the mercy rule when Lawhorn walked to load the bases again, but RMA reliever Wells Hutson got out of it with a fielder’s choice.

The Eagles put their leadoff batter (Connor Freeman) on with a walk in the fifth but two strikeouts and a flyout followed. Hutson then struck out two and coaxed a flyout as CBA stranded two runners in the bottom of the frame.

Hutson doubled with one out in the sixth but was picked off second base. RMA returned the favor when Hutson picked a Falcon off second base in the bottom of the sixth.

Chandler Cockrell’s infield hit started the top of the seventh for the Eagles, but a strikeout and a double play ended the game.
