Chargers down RMA 5-1

The fact the Wilson Christian Academy baseball team was coming off spring break and a week of inactivity concerned 12th-year head coach Ty Bissett.

However, Bissett’s worries were soon eased. His Chargers posted a 5-1 victory against Rocky Mount Academy, a 2-A member of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association, in Saturday’s session of the third annual Golden Leaf Invitational on the Hunt High diamond.

Wilson Christian, the state champion the last two seasons in the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A division, hiked its record to 6-1-1, while the Eagles slid to 5-4.

Trailing 1-0, Wilson Christian seized the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second and constructed a working margin with two runs in the fourth.

Kevin Teague laced a run-scoring single in the fourth and Austin Holland tripled in a run.

Junior left-hander Will Whitley and right-hander Kevin Teague got the job done on the mound. Whitley bumped his record to 2-0, working five innings and allowing two hits, an earned run and two walks while striking out three.

Preston Skinner doubled for the Chargers, while Brandon Krob went 1 for 1.

"We came out and moved runners,” Bissett said of the Chargers’ approach. "We were still aggressive at the plate. We had a little rust the first inning, but I am excited.”

Bissett also expressed excitement to have the opportunity to play in the Easter competition for the second straight year.

"I love it,” he said, "and it’s for a good cause (the fight against cancer).”

Next up in the invitational is a Wilson Christian matchup against Southern Nash at 6 p.m. Monday in Fleming Stadium.

"We’ll find out what we are made of,” reasoned Bissett.
