SN, Edwards shut out Faith Christian 3-0

Leroy Edwards, a sophomore right-hander, hurled a three-hit shutout to lead 3-A Big East Conference leader Southern Nash to a 3-0 victory against Rocky Mount Faith Christian on the Fike High diamond in Saturday’s opening session of the third annual Golden Leaf Invitational.
Backed by a defense that did not commit an error, Edwards did not allow a Faith Christian (7-3) base runner to reach third base in posting his second win against one loss. Edwards walked three and struck out three.
"I was feeling pretty tight,” Edwards said. "But as I kept going .... I started hitting my spots like I was supposed to.
"I feel pretty good because it was my first complete game and it was nice to have the shutout. I tried to mix in a slider and curve with my fastball to change speeds. I tried to change location and change speeds.”
Unique about Edwards is the fact he throws and catches the baseball with his right hand because he has just one finger on his left hand.
"I first tried to pitch when I was 7 years old,” he explained. "It’s second nature now.”
The Firebirds (8-4) struck for the only run they needed in the top of the first inning. Jason Montague, who was hit by a pitch, later scored on shortstop Trevor Mills’ single. In the two-run fifth, Ryan Marlowe and Dawson Sikes each walked. Edwards helped his cause with a run-scoring grounder. Jason Johnson singled in the final run.
The outcome pleased Southern Nash head coach Todd Brewer.
"Leroy threw strikes; it was an errorless game and we got timely hits,” he assessed. "We got the right result.”
Southern Nash next sees action in the Easter bash at 6 p.m. Monday in Fleming Stadium against Wilson Christian.
Edwards assures the Firebirds would like to be a factor in bidding for the title in the 22-team field.
"Hopefully, we will go 3-0,” he said.
