The Burlington School’s Josiah Jeffers likes winning so much that he’s determined to make that part of his college basketball experience.

Jeffers, a senior point guard, signed a national letter of intent to play for Longwood, a Big South Conference member that has struggled in its early stages of Division I membership.

“They really stressed to me that I could help change the program because of my legacy of winning here at TBS,” Jeffers said Thursday. “I believe my destiny is to contribute to growth and change of the program.”

Jeffers has been part of two North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association state championship teams with The Burlington School — 2015 and 2017.

He has been a The Burlington School student since the sixth grade. He said his freshman season was eye-opening in many ways.

“The older guys pushed me and never gave up on me,” he said.

Spartans coach Ron Johnson said Jeffers evolved into a special player.

“Watching his tenacity on the court has been really impressive,” Johnson said. “You can tell he really likes to win. … He was a talented younger guy and as he got into high school his commitment to training has really increased.”

Jeffers, a 6-foot-1 player who lives in Gibsonville, will have a heightened role this season with a revamped Spartans roster.

“He’ll kind of be the main guy,” Johnson said, noting that season’s Times-News All-Region Player of the Year John Meeks is now at Bucknell. “He has been a guy in the group and now he’ll be the guy.”

Jeffers, who also received an offer from Radford, said Longwood was in contact him the longest. Longwood associate head coach Jake Luhn played under Johnson as a youth in Florida.

Jeffers, 17, said Longwood’s small-school feel is similar to the atmosphere at The Burlington School.

Jeffers’ most-recent Amateur Athletic Union club was PSB Select out of Charlotte.

Jeffers’ older brother, T.J. Jeffers, is a freshman on the team at Division II Catawba. His cousin Jamison Jeffers, who played for Cummings High School and Burlington Christian Academy before competing in college, also attended Thursday’s signing ceremony.
