HIGH POINT — Jacob Cozart knew what he had to do. And he did it with ease. The sophomore right-hander fired his second straight complete game as the Wesleyan Christian Trojans blew by the High Point Christian Cougars, 6-1, at the new Wesleyan Christian baseball field on Friday night.
The Trojans (14-4), who entered the game as the No. 17 team in North Carolina, according to MaxPreps, were able to hold off their rival Cougars (21-4), who entered the game as the No. 10 team in the state, in the final regular season game for both teams.Cozart (2-0) was the story in this one. He only needed 88 pitches to get past the powerful Cougars lineup, scattering seven hits and striking out five while his defense did the rest.
“I felt really good,” Cozart said. “I knew right after that first inning that I was going to throw a complete game right here. These are our big rivals and they beat us last time so I just wanted to shut them down.”Cozart also helped his own cause at the plate, walking and scoring in the 3rd inning then adding an RBI single in the 6th.
The key play in this game came from LF Luke Barrow, who delivered a three RBI triple in the 3rd inning to knock out Cougars starter RHP Chase Britton (7-2) after 2.2 IP, his shortest start of the season.Barrow went 2-for-3 with 4 RBI, setting a new career high.
“Everytime you play them it’s a big game,” Trojans head coach Scott Davis said. “We knew we’d be in a dog fight and our guys were up to the challenge. This was a key win for us because it gives us a chance to get the No. 1 seed in the state tournament.”
For the Cougars, Britton drove in the lone run with an RBI single in the 5th inning and RF Drake Carrick scored the lone run. Both went 2-for-3 on the evening. CF Kameron Heath (triple) and 3B Logan Robson (double) had the lone extra base hits on the evening.
The Cougars suffered their largest margin of defeat this season while tying their lowest run out-put of the season. They entered the matchup as winners of 16 of their last 17 games, including a 4-0 victor y over the Trojans in their last meeting on March 19.
“You gotta execute,” said Cougars head coach Corey Gesell. “I thought we hit the ball hard but Cozart got us to pop the ball up. We both had seven hits but they got a couple of hits with guys on base and we did not get hits with guys on base.”The Cougars and Trojans will both await to hear who they will be playing in the first round of their respective state playoffs on Tuesday. The Trojans will be seeking their fourth consecutive 4A state title.
