Knights can’t close out Ravens in 53-51 loss

RALEIGH — Despite chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute of Wednesday’s varsity boys basketball game, Greenfield School just couldn’t get a shot to fall, just as it had most of the night, in a 53-51 loss at Ravenscroft.
“I was proud of our defensive effort,” said Knights head coach Rob Salter, whose team evened its record at 1-1. “We had a lot of shots we wanted, but we just couldn’t throw it in the ocean.”
The Ravens, playing their season opener, led by two points when the Knights missed a pair of free throws with 19 seconds to play. After regaining possession, Greenfield couldn’t get a lay-up attempt to drop with nine seconds. Bryson Baker, the Knights’ lone senior, forced a turnover to give them one last shot. Junior Trey Pittman’s 3-point shot at the buzzer hit the back of the rim.
“We hate that we kind of let this one slip away but we can take a lot of positives from it,” Salter said.
Greenfield, limited to its lowest point out since a 55-49 loss Dec. 30, 2016, was just 4 of 16 from 3-point range.
The Knights were led by junior guard Collin Guilford with 17 points, to go with five steals. Junior 6-foot-5 guard Dji Bailey had 11 points and junior guard Creighton Lebo added 10 points.
The Ravens got a game-high 20 points from junior guard Lucrichard Rameau while senior 6-8 forward Jake Van der Heijden tossed in 15 points.
Greenfield returns to action at the Phenom Hoops National High School Showcase on Friday at Greensboro Day School. The Knights will tip off against Sanford Grace Christian at 3:30 p.m.
