Greensboro Day showed why lower seeds can’t be taken lightly in postseason basketball tournaments Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Dick’s Sporting Goods tournament.
The seventh-seeded Bengals pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 59-40 victory over second-seeded IMG Academy from Bradenton, Fla.
“We are a true team,” Greensboro Day coach Freddy Johnson said. “We like to distribute the ball and our coach, Jeff Smith, does a great job of preparing us defensively.
“We’ve held some very talented teams to low points; we only allow 44 points a game.”
Up next for Greensboro Day is a showdown against third-seeded Montverde (Fla.) Academy at 3 p.m. today in the semifinals on ESPN2. Montverde, the 2016 Dick’s Nationals champion, beat sixth-seeded Shadow Mountain (Ariz.) 74-61.
J.P. Moorman led Greensboro Day (34-3) with 15 points and seven rebounds, Jordan Perkins added 14 points and Will Dillard added 10 points including all six of his free-throw attempts.
“We’ve played a competitive national schedule this season, and we also play on the summer circuit against these guys,” Moorman said. “We see great players, great teams enough.
“Today, we were well prepared. Our coaches do a great job of learning the other teams’ set and how to defend it.”
