Providence Day’s Janelle Bailey among finalists for USA U17 team

By Langston Wertz Jr.

Providence Day center Janelle Bailey is one of 18 players still alive to play for the USA Basketball U17 team that will participate in the FIBA World Championships this summer.

The team trials began in Colorado Springs, Colo, last Thursday with 139 participants. That number has been lowered to 18, and on Friday USA Basketball will announce the 12-person team that will play in Spain, beginning June 22.

Bailey is the only Carolinas player still alive to make the team. Last season, Bailey led the Chargers to a seventh straight N.C. Independent Schools 3A state championship along with Observer Ms. Basketball Erin Whalen, a Vanderbilt recruit.

A three-time all-state center, Bailey averaged 16.8 points and 8.8 rebounds last season and is ranked in top 75 by national recruiting services. She has more than 50 Division I offers.
