HIGH POINT – Syrus Sadler and Nick Brown each scored 23 points as Westchester Country Day opened the season by defeating visiting Salem Baptist 88-80 on Thursday.

Luke Johnson added 13 for Westchester and Thomas Powell and Tyler Matthews had nine each.

After leading by a point after the first quarter, Westchester stretched its advantage of 46-40 at halftime and 73-60 after three.

Salem drops to 1-1.



Salem won the girls game in overtime, 48-40.

Hannah Klein led the Wildcats with 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Dori Keever added eight points and dished three assists. Emma Steward had six points and six rebounds while Lily Wilson dished nine assists.

Westchester trailed by four at halftime and the end of the third quarter but forced the overtime period by outscoring Salem 12-8 in the fourth. Salem, however, went on a 8-0 run in the extra period.

Westchester returns to action at Pinehurst O’Neal on Tuesday.
