Jerry Faulkner is leaving Charlotte Latin

Jimmy Broadway, AD at Charlotte Latin, announced today that Jerry Faulkner is leaving Charlotte Latin. "Jerry is going to Hilton Head Christian School in Hilton Head, SC," remarked Mr. Broadway. "He will be Assistant Headmaster in charge of Student Development. He will not coach the first year but will be assisting coaches in the sports program at their school."

Coach Faulkner has been coaching for 31 years and, during that span, has an overall record of 704 wins verses only 224 losses(515-157 while at Latin). Every time his team is in a game and Coach Faulkner is on the sidelines, his team will win 76% of the time! Simply amazing!! Coach Faulkner has NINE state titles to his name and has had only ONE losing season in those 31 years of being a head coach. Only two coaches in the state of North Carolina, in the state's history, have more wins than Coach Faulkner.

Mr. Broadway went on to say, "His wife will be employed by a bank in Hilton Head and the Faulkner's will be heading down to Hilton Head in July. Jerry is one of most outstanding coaches I have ever been associated with and he runs his program the right way. He will be greatly missed."

Jimmy Broadway also stated, "Jerry's wonderful reputation with student-athletes led Hilton Head Christian to bring Jerry into being involved with their entire student body. He will be tremendously missed for running a rock-solid basketball program and his tremendous postitive influence he has had on the student athletes at Latin."

Greensboro Day School's Freddy Johnson remarked, "We just lost one of the best coaches the NCISAA and the state has ever had. Coach Faulkner and his basketball program are synonomous with class and professionalism." Coach Johnson went on to say, "Jerry has been a mentor to me. I have always looked up to Coach Faulkner and went to him for advice from my very first days of coaching here til now. He is one of the best "X's" and "O's" coaches ever in the state. If you are in coaching, you always measure your program to Jerry's program.....how they enter the gym, how they conduct themselves on the court, how they play the game of basketball. I am saddened by the loss but very happy for him. It is a great move for Jerry, his family, and his career."

Christ School's David Gaines stated, "I was shocked when I found out! It is sad for all of us who have known Jerry and had the chance to play against his teams. Playing against Latin always makes you a better coach as you have to be so prepared for his teams. But, this is a career move for Jerry that I guess he could not pass up. I think his legacy speaks for itself - all the relationships he had with players, all the wins, all the championships....his career is one that no one will ever forget here in the NCISAA."

On a personal note, I will miss Jerry greatly. He made a point of calling me twice a week just to talk about hoops and find out what was going on around the state. I also received his monthly basketball alumni newsletter that he sent out to every player and manager who had ever been a part or who was presently a part of his basketball program. Half the newsletter was dedicated to the present team but the rest of the letter was about what former Latin players and managers were doing in their lives. I truly appreciate his help in publicizing the website to all his players, families, and alums and for always keeping me in the loop with regards to Latin basketball. Jerry, you will be missed, my friend!
