BCA tripped in OT
Some of them came to see 5-star prospect Isaiah Todd.
All of them left talking about Brock Williams of Burlington Christian Academy.
Despite 42 points from the sophomore guard, the Royals boys’ basketball team fell 92-90 to visiting Trinity Academy of Raleigh in overtime Tuesday night in NCISAA Triangle-Triad Athletic Conference play.
“The thing about Brock is he works so hard, so he’s prepared for moments like this. I know he’ll be a little disappointed that he didn’t get a few of his shots to go,” BCA coach Ryan Bernardi said. “In overtime, him trying to get us back in that game was remarkable.”
Todd, a 6-foot-10 junior with scholarship offers from North Carolina, North Carolina State, Kansas and Virginia, among others, scored 31 points, including six in overtime, to lead the Tigers (9-3 overall, 3-1 Tri-TAC) to victory.
“We were trying to take them out and get the win,” Williams said. “I think I’m overlooked, underrated. People got to see that I’m actually good (in this game).”
Forward Jackeem Herbin poured in 27 points and his dunk with about 4 1/2 minutes left in regulation gave the Royals (7-3, 2-2) a 10-point lead that evaporated on Todd’s emphatic dunk with 30 seconds left.
“I’m devastated for our players because I thought we prepared well and we were in a position to win the game …,” Bernardi said. “Not holding on to that lead falls 95 percent on the coach, so I’ve got to coach them better. But we’ve got some fight, and I’m proud of them.”
BCA brought aggressiveness on the defensive end, jumping in and out of passing lanes and forcing Trinity into turnovers. Williams finished with 10 steals, but ultimately Todd took flight when the Tigers need him to the most.
“It was a big part of our game plan to play team defense on Isaiah Todd. Collin Wilson did an incredible job. Jackeem Herbin did an incredible job. Isaiah Todd is an unbelievable talent,” Bernardi said. “He’s an unbelievable passer. He was good, but our guys just came in and competed.”
The Herbin / Williams duo accounted for more than 75 percent of BCA’s offense in a high-flying show full of energy.
Williams’ last-ditch effort from long at the regulation buzzer went partially down the hoop but bounced out, sending the game to overtime.
In the third quarter, Williams scored 12 points and Herbin made three 3-pointers, but the Tigers stayed within striking distance thanks to Todd, who got to his game after a scoreless first quarter.
“Jackeem’s third quarter was absolutely phenomenal. He can do a lot of things well for us,” Bernardi said.
An 11-5 run, punctuated by a Herbin 3-pointer, which elicited a Trinity timeout, gave BCA a 45-39 lead just 1:42 into the third quarter.
The teams headed to halftime deadlocked 34-34.
Trailing 12-7 early, BCA responded with an 11-3 flurry to take grab an 18-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Jake Bertolini-Felice supplied 25 points while Tyler Gill and Sylvester White scored 16 apiece for Trinity.
