In battle of top 10 Sweet 16 teams, Carmel Christian outlasts Providence Day BY TIM DONELLI
The Phenom Hoops November Classic at Charlotte Country Day featured a Saturday matchup of two defeated teams in the Carmel Christian Cougars and the Providence Day Chargers. I
n a seesaw affair, Carmel Christian pulled out a 60-59 victory over Providence Day. Cougars’ point guard Logan Threatt made two free throws with nine seconds left to give Carmel Christian a 3-point lead.
Providence Day opted for an uncontested layup rather than go for a tying 3-pointer. But after cutting the Cougars’ lead to one with three seconds left, time ran out.
“This team today was a team that you know it’s Ron Johnson, (Providence Day coach) so it’s going to be well coached right off the get go,” said Carmel Christian coach Joe Badgett. “They’re going to structured and they’re going to be disciplined. So, we had to get our kids to settle down and just play basketball the right way and not be so impatient.”
The Cougars’ Cade Tyson, despite a slow start, finished with a game-high 26 points, with Threatt also finishing in double figures with 17. The Chargers’ scoring was much more balanced with four players in double figures. Donovan Atwell paced Providence Day with 15, followed by Jaxon Prunty and Riley Allenspach each with 12. Quave Propst-Allison also finished in double figures with 11 for Providence Day.
“I really just tried to get my teammates more involved,” said Tyson when asked about his slow start and then his turnaround. “I tried to move the ball a little bit more, not look for the first shot right away and try to get a better one.”
Providence Day led throughout the first half and by as many as nine, and took a 28-24 halftime advantage into halftime. The Chargers increased their lead to ten points with five minutes left in the third quarter. But Carmel Christian went on a quick, big run and took its first lead of the game at 39-36 on a 3-pointer by Tyson with three minutes left in the third.
The game was tied at 42-42 at the end of the third quarter, and each team took turns leading in the fourth until the Cougars prevailed late. Threatt, a senior point guard, saved his best for last with an impressive 12-point fourth quarter that included the two free throws with nine seconds left which proved to be the game-winning points.
“I was just trying to play hard,” said Threatt. “I really just wanted to win, that was it. My team is my everything so as long as I play hard, guys follow through and they’re going to play hard too. That was it.”

THEY SAID IT “The objective of the November Classic is to pit really good teams against each other that would normally not play each other during the course of the regular season. It’s designed to allow them to play in an atmosphere and platform where a lot of fans can come out during the day. It gives everyone a good opportunity and a nice snapshot of where everyone is right now in the state. The state of North Carolina is just loaded with talent and talented teams.” Phenom November Classic Director Rick Lewis.
