Queen’s Grant center Patrick Tape’ didn’t have a huge offensive game in the Buccaneer Classic Final against host Charlotte Country Day, but he made quite a difference.

The 6-foot-9 Columbia University recruit scored just six points but added 10 rebounds, eight blocked shots and seven assists as Queen’s Grant turned a tight game into a 61-52 victory Saturday night.

Country Day led by one at halftime and extended its lead to 36-30 late in the third after Jack Vaughn scored, but Queen’s Grant closed the quarter with eight straight points to take a 38-36 lead. Queen’s Grant led 45-42 with just more than five minutes remaining. Another 8-0 run in the next two minutes pushed the lead to 53-42 after Terron Dixon’s basket with 3:20 left. Tape’ had two of his blocks in that late run for Queen’s Grant, which avenged a 65-53 loss to Country Day on Dec. 2.

Dixon led Queen’s Grant with a game-high 21 points while Chris Jackson scored 13 and Noah Clemons added 11. Country Day was led by Rylan McLaurin’s 17 points, and Triston Miller added another 10 points.

Quote: “Our guys really responded,” said Queen’s Grant coach Jay Forsythe. “The defense was the difference and we’ve worked really hard on that over the last few weeks. When you play good defense it leads to opportunities on the other end and today showed that.”

Records: Queens Grant improves to 5-3 while Country Day falls to 6-5.

Worth mentioning: In the third-place game, Hickory Christian used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to overcome a six-point halftime deficit and defeat Metrolina Christian 58-51. Hickory Christian’s Landen Smith led all scorers with 39 points while Emeka Nwankwo had 20 for Metrolina Christian.

Free throw shooting hurt both teams, but more so Country Day who was just 11-for-22 while Queen’s Grant was 16-for-27 (59 percent).

Both of Country Day’s leading scorers, McLaurin and Miller, are freshmen. With fellow freshman Myles Browner, they accounted for 56 percent of the Buccaneer’s points.

What’s Next: Country Day will host Woodberry Forest (Virginia) on Monday while Queen’s Grant is off until Dec. 29 when it plays in the KSA Events Tournament at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.
