GREENSBORO _ On the fi nal night of a historic 40th HAECO Invitational highschool basketball tournament, Greensboro Day made a little bit of history of its own.

The top-seeded Bengals beat No. 2 seed Northwest Guilford 81-60 to win their record fifth consecutive boys title on Tuesday night at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

“I’m excited for the kids,” said Greensboro Day coach Freddy Johnson, “and it’sa great tribute to them and how hard they played tonight, because we beat a very good Northwest team who has an outstanding coach.”

The Bengals (17-3) got off to a fast start and led by 10 points twice in the opening period. Jaquar Moorman “had a tough first quarter,” Johnson said, with four turnovers. But the junior “was great after that,” the coach added. Moorman scored 19 points to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors.Moorman hit eight of 12 fi eld-goal attempts and the Bengals went 35-for-59 overall (59 percent).

“We did a much better job of reversing the ball” than in a 52-40 semifinal win over Northern Guilford on Monday night, “and we attacked the basket,” Johnson said. Northwest Guilford coach Lee Reaviswas impressed with what he saw . “They shot the ball extremely well tonight, much better than in any of the five games I’d seen them play,” Reavis said of the Bengals. “Part of our game plan was to make them hit jump shots and keep them out of the middle. They opened up knocking down some jump shots, and when we got out and tried to press them, they did an outstanding job of handling it, attacking the basket and getting easy looks.”

Northwest (8-2) got back into the game with a 10-0 run to close the fi rst half, cutting its deficit to 39-28 behind six points from Tre Turner, who fi nished with a game-high 20. The Vikings closed to 43-36 early in the third quarter, but the Bengals pulled away in the fi nal period.

“We got a little bit fl at offensively and stopped moving, we took some quick shots and that’s our downfall,” Reavis said. “But I’m extremely proud of our kids and the way they competed.”

Greensboro Day competed well enough to win a tournament title for the first time in two tries this season, after losing twice to nationally ranked teams at the Chick-fi l-A Classic in Columbia, S.C.

“We have three chances to win a championship,” Johnson said. “We did not win in Columbia, we won this one and now we want to win the (NCISAA Class 3-A) state title.”
