Minus Rice, = Durham Academy defeats Village Christian in overtime 67-62

Raleigh, N.C. — Durham Academy defeated Village Christian in the third game of the 2020 City of Oaks Classic at NRCA. The Cavaliers were down by one point with 20 seconds to go in overtime and pulled out a 5-point win.
Durham Academy managed to win despite missing star sophomore MJ Rice, who is going to be out for several months.
In the first quarter, the teams combined for 36 points.
Village took a 19-17 lead into the second quarter.
A 3-pointer by Nik Graves of Durham Academy cut the Village lead from 24-19 to 24-22 with 2:30 left in the first half. Soon after, a 3-ointer by Brent Randleman of Durham Academy cut the Village lead to 26-25 with 59 seconds left in the first half. A layup by Zavian McLean gave Village a 28-25 lead right before the half.
Zavian McLean led all scorers with 18 points at the break. Toby Harris led Durham Academy with 8 points.
Midway through the third quarter, Durham Academy took the lead away from Village. Brent Randleman made a layup and the foul to give the Cavs a 35-34 lead with 4:25 left in the quarter. A little bit after that, Nik Graves of Durham Academy hit a Fastbreak layup to take a 40-36 lead. Village responded with a quick bucket to make the game 40-38 Durham Academy.
Out of a timeout, McLean registered a layup to tie things back up at 40. The lead went back-and-forth until Durham Academy exited the third quarter leading 45-44.
The back-and-forth nature of the third quarter continued into the fourth. Neither side was able to garner any significant separation on the scoreboard until there was under four minutes to go. Graves hit a 3-pointer to give DA a 56-53 lead. Following the 3-pointer, Village went on a 4-0 run to take a 57-56 lead with 1:55 left.
After a free throw by Durham Academy, the game was tied at 57 with just over a minute left. Village Christian planned to run the clock down to take the last shot of the game. The Knights called two timeouts before being called for 5 seconds closely guarded.
On a baseline out-of-bounds inbound play, Village threw the ball up to Justin Thomas around the rim. Thomas missed the bunny and Durham Academy recovered the rebound.
Durham Academy called a timeout with 12.3 seconds left. Out of the timeout, Durham Academy couldn’t get a shot up.
The game went to overtime tied at 57.
With 20 seconds to go in overtime, Durham Academy trailed Village 62-61. Toby Harris of DA hit a three with 8 seconds to go. Randleman stole the ball from Village on the next Knights possession to seal the game. Graves hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give Durham Academy a 67-62 win.
Durham Academy is now 19-4 overall, while Village Christian is 13-4.
Village will travel to take on Freedom Christian out of Fayetteville on Tuesday. Freedom is 15-6 overall this season. Durham Academy is set to travel to Cary Academy on Tuesday.
