FCD finishes fifth in Champion Bracket

PFAFFTOWN — Although No. 5 Forsyth Country Day had its hopes of winning the 2015 Frank Spencer Holiday Classic quickly dashed with a first-round loss to West Forsyth, the Furies finished the tournament strong with a dominating 77-46 victory over No. 6 Lexington.

After losing a three-point game to the fourth-seeded Titans on Saturday, FCD (15-2) defeated West Stokes and Lexington by a combined 38 points during its final two games to claim fifth place in the Champion Bracket.

Against Lexington, the Furies were led by senior Bruno Solomun, who scored 18 points and corralled a game-high 15 rebounds. For the game, FCD scored 40 points in the paint and outrebounded Lexington 44-15.

“It is hard in the third game of a tournament, especially in the loser’s bracket, to stay focused,” said coach Howard West of FCD. “I thought, for the most part, we executed well and I was really pleased with Bruno taking over the boards.”

After a few opening minutes of back-and-forth play between the two teams, FCD began to control the game midway through the first quarter. The Furies went on a 24-5 run over a 5:50 stretch, capped off by a lay-up from Nick Evtimov with 6:34 left in the first half.

Evtimov, who scored 10 points, was one of four FCD players to score in double-figures against Lexington. He was joined by Solomun, Ivan Millicevic, who had 17 points, and Tripp Greene, who added 12 points.

The Furies led by double-digits for the final 25:04 of the game, stretching their lead to as wide as 37 points midway through the third quarter. FCD shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the field, including an impressive 24-of-46 mark from inside the 3-point line.

“Fifth place was the best we could do and that’s what I told them after we lost our first game,” West said. “We were out of the championship, but we could still finish 2-1 in the tournament and we accomplished our goal. That still feels good.”

Lexington (9-3) finished the Frank Spencer with a 1-2 record and a sixth-place finish in the Champion Bracket. The Yellow Jackets recorded a pair of losses to R.J. Reynolds and Forsyth Country Day by a combined 61 points, while defeating defending Frank Spencer champion Reagan, 78-75, in their lone win.

Lexington sophomore Marquise Jordan led the team in scoring in all three tournament games, including a 19-point performance against FCD on 8-of-13 shooting.
