APA scores 101 points, sets school record against Thales Academy

APEX — Arendell Parrott Academy has been on a roll lately and Wednesday became a historic night for the program.

The Patriots won their fourth game in the last five with a 101-65 victory over Thales Academy, breaking the school record for most points in a game. Nick Harrison also had a big night, as his 37 points tied Nathan Perry for the greatest single-game total. Perry set the record in 2006 and Harrison’s hot start had him within striking distance.

Harrison was still recovering from the flu, but his start had the Titans defense sick in the process.

“Our defense really got us started and my teammates kept finding me for easy shots,” Harrison said. “This meant a lot — it was a lot of hard work in the gym over the summer that made this happen.”

Harrison scored all the points in a 15-2 start for the Patriots, who never trailed. Harrison hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter on his way to 23 points, and although the Titans' Cameron Mason hit a buzzer-beater from beyond the arc, APA (11-12) led 30-11 going into the second.

Thales Academy (3-9) chipped away at the lead, getting within 32-20 after a pair of Jordan France free throws early in the second, but Will Whitley's subsequent basket sparked a 14-3 run. The Patriots went up by as many as 23 on the way to a 50-34 halftime advantage.

In the second half, the onslaught continued, and a basket from Josh Okonkwo with 4:06 remaining gave the Patriots a 92-52 advantage to start the running clock. APA hit 15 3-pointers as a team, including Harrison’s seventh 3-pointer with 2:06 to play to give the Patriots the scoring record.

Patriots coach Glen Taylor said he was not only pleased with the victory, but the team’s progression as of late.

“With a new coach, it’s all about the process — not as much a singular game,” Taylor said. “It’s been a fine line between allowing them to learn while also pushing them, but we’ve definitely got some momentum going as a program.”

Mir Mir Moore had 13 points and five assists for Arendell Parrott with Jonah Beaman adding 11. For Thales Academy, France scored 22 of his team-high 33 points in the second half while Jacob Parsonese added 10.
