Southwest Guilford cruises past High Point Christian

HIGH POINT _ With a 39-point win over High Point Christian on Friday night, Southwest Guilford advanced to thefi nals of the Sheetz Holiday Christmas Classic. The Cowboys host Southern Guilford in the championship game tonight at Coggins Gym at Southwest Guilford High School. Keyshaun Langley led the Cowboys with 23 points. JayDen Turner had 14. In all, 11 Cowboys contributed points to win.
“Overall, it was a goodperformance, but I think we were a little spotty at times,” said Southwest coach Guy Shavers. “We have a lot of talent, but at times we tend to count too much on talent.”
High Point Christian kept Southwest quiet for much of the first quarter. But with 23 seconds left in the quarter and Southwest trailing 10-9, the Cougars Zach Shumate was called for an intentional foul underneath his own basket. Joel Pettiford made the two free throws. Then Southwest’s Cam Thompson sank a 3-pointer, and the Cowboys had a 14-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
Led by Keyshaun Langley, a 6-1 senior, the Cowboys (9-0) increased the tempo in the second quarter.Langley scored 13 of Southwest’s 31 second quarter points and the Cowboys led 45-33 at thehalf. With four minutes gone in the third quarter, Southwest had built a 20-point lead, and the game was out of reach at the end of the third quarter.
Landon Sutton scored 20 for High Point Christian, who dropped to 10-4. “They are a quality
team,” Shavers said of the Cougars. “It’s a real confi dence boost for us. It’s huge for us to play quality teams to see where we stand.”
