West Charlotte upsets Charlotte Christian
The West Charlotte Lions closed out another successful Charlotte Hoops Festival Saturday by upsetting the Charlotte Christian Knights 53-41 at Vance High School.
The Knights, ranked No. 2 in the Observer’s Sweet 16, entered Saturday’s game at 6-0 -- and coming off a blowout win at two-time S.C. 5A champ Dorman -- but suffered their first loss of the season. The Lions, ranked No. 6 in the Sweet 16, overcame a 28-23 halftime deficit to out-score Christian 30-13 in the second half.
Christian’s offense disappeared after halftime. The Knights only scored seven points in the first twelve minutes of the second half. Christian shot a dismal 17-of-47 from the field for the game.
Meanwhile, West Charlotte’s all-everything power forward Patrick Williams, began to heat up after a slow start. Williams, with only four first-half points, ramped up his play in the second half with 14 points to lead all scorers with 18 points. Quinton Thomas added 13 for the Lions (2-1) while Cartier Jernigan also finished in double figures with 10.
Seth Bennett Sr. led Christian in scoring with 16 points while Efosa U-Edosomwan had eight for the Knights.
“I feel like this one of our best defensive teams in the three years I’ve been here as head coach,” West Charlotte’s Jacoby Davis said, “and we’re still trying to put it together. We’ve got some young guys, some freshmen, and they are still trying to understand man-to-man principles. I think we have a really good chance to be a good defensive team and we showed it in the second half tonight.”
