Jessica Capes still has several months before she begins classes at Wingate.
But the Burlington Christian Academy senior said she already feels she’s a part of the women’s soccer program she’ll be joining.
“I was already excited but as soon as I was signing the paper, it became very real and it gave me butterflies inside,” she said of signing a national letter of intent. “I texted the group chat that we have with all the Wingate commits and I was like, ‘guys, I’m super excited!’ ”
First impressions on her visit to the campus stood out.
“I still Snapchat one of the girls that hosted me (on a visit) at Wingate and she’s really great to me even though she’s older and a college kid, and I’m just a high school senior,” she said.
“When I went to visit, they were like, ‘oh, do you have a change of clothes.’ I was like, ‘oh, well no.’ One of the girls gave me her outfit to wear.”
Capes guided the Royals to the semifinals of the Class 2-A North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association playoffs last season.
“Winning the state championship would be great,” she said. “It’s a huge motivating factor because last year we got placed in the lowest position in states and it wasn’t looking good, but everybody fought for it and they had the heart for it. Everybody pushed themselves and that was really motivating for this next season.”
She considered Queens, Chowan, Mount Olive and Brevard, before deciding on Wingate.
“Mainly, they had all the things that I was looking for in a school. They have a pre-(physical therapy) program and a graduate school for physical therapy, because that’s the major I want to go into,” she said. “They also have a study-abroad program — which I want to travel the world. Most importantly, I wanted to play soccer.”
