MT. HERMON — The Burlington School boys’ basketball team faced one of its toughest tests of the season in Greensboro Day School on Monday afternoon at the Tony Perrou Classic.
For the most part, the Spartans went blow for blow with the defending NCISAA Class 3-A state champions, before eventually dropping the contest, 69-61.
“I liked the way we competed. I don’t necessarily like the way we executed all the time. We had a lot of defensive mistakes that led to their baskets and didn’t always finish with a rebound when we did get stops,” The Burlington School coach Will Roberson said. “That’s why we play that game because when you make a mistake, Greensboro Day exposes it. We need to get ready for the state tournament so we need our mistakes to be exposed so we can work on them and get better and don’t make the same mistakes next month.”
Ja’Dun Michael (19 points), Michael Wade (18), Ji’Lil Michael (14) and Heath Gulledge (11) paced The Burlington School.
The Spartans (18-5) entered the fourth quarter trailing 47-44 after getting to within one in the third quarter on a Gulledge 3-pointer.
“We didn’t back down and we competed. We did get behind 8-10 points and didn’t fold,” Roberson said. “Last year, what happened a lot is when we played really good teams, we would get behind 10 and all the sudden it was 20 or 25. … For us to hang in there shows a lot about the team.”
After the Bengals (21-5) extended their lead, The Burlington School’s Michael Wade converted an and-one to pull the Spartans back to within four. A technical was called on Wade for what the officials explained was stepping over a defender.
Greensboro Day School connected on its two ensuing free throws and closed the game out.
Carson McCorkle, a Virginia commit, scored 30 points to lead Greensboro Day School.
“We came off some shooters at times,” Roberson said. “We didn’t necessarily defend screens exactly the way we wanted to every time.”
