Burlington School got its defense going in the third quarter, holding Garner to just eight points and getting back into position where the game could be close late.
The Spartans took full advantage of that, as they hung around in a back-and-forth fourth quarter before Michael put the finishing touches on the game with his huge shot.
Kuluel Mading proved to be a force on the boards for the Spartans, collecting a game-high 12 on a day where control of the ball was at a premium.
The Trojans struggled from the floor throughout the game, as they finished shooting just 37 percent.
The Spartans shot 50 percent for the whole game, but 18 turnovers plagued them until the end.
Mylyjael Poteat led all scorers for the Spartans with 19 points, while Michael had 15 of his own in support.
Christopher Nobles led the way for Garner in scoring with 15 points in the losing effort. Daveon Dunn was right behind him with 13.
Garner will look to bounce back after a break on January 3 against Cary.
The Burlington School will take the court next on the same night in a game at Lee Christian.
