Poteat’s double-double drives TBS boys

Mylyjael Poteat seems to be comfortable with his new team.

The junior forward’s double-double helped lead the way Friday night for The Burlington School in a 64-43 NCISAA Mid-Carolina Conference victory against visiting Cresset Christian Academy.

The 6-foot-9 big man, who’s in his first season for the Spartans after spending the previous two seasons playing for Clover Garden, scored 22 points.

“It’s been a great adjustment,” he said. “Everybody’s been welcoming and it has been smooth.”

Ja’Dun Michael helped carry the offensive load for the Spartans (15-4 overall, 4-0 Mid-Carolina Conference), finishing with 19 points.

“One thing about our team is that the pieces fit very well. We’ve kind of got one of everything, which is really nice,” TBS coach Will Roberson said. “We’ve got a point guard who can really push the ball. Guys that can really shoot. Some versatile forwards and then having Mylyjael inside, those five guys really fit well together.”

Poteat was out of action from May to November with an injury, meaning he had to work his way back into the swing of things.

“I definitely had to get back in the groove of the game and just get used to playing again,” Poteat said. “I don’t think I’m at that point. Not yet, but definitely every day getting better and better.”

Poteat crashed the glass for 18 rebounds.

“He helps us make up for a lot of mistakes. He can cover up for a lot of things. He can make plays where there’s no play there. That’s a big help and adds to our versatility to be able to go inside and out and throw it to him,” Roberson said. “He’s a really good passer too, so even when we throw it in there, he can get it back out to guys who can shoot.”

His two second-quarter dunks, one of which was an and-one, gave The Burlington School energy in what was a tight game for much of the first half.

“He’s coming into his own. He’s getting more consistent which is what we need out of him,” Roberson said.

Ajay Thompson scored 30 points to power the Eagles (5-3, 2-3).

“He was a point of emphasis in our scouting report — get the ball out of his hands. He’s good enough that he can score anyway,” Roberson said. “We made the adjustment to put Ja’Dun on him in the second half and Ja’Dun did a really good job on him, but he’s a good enough player he can still get shots off no matter what.”

Cresset Christian jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Spartans responded with a 14-2 run to close the first quarter.

The Burlington School was 1-for-17 from 3-point range. Heath Gulledge made the one and finished with seven points.
