BURLINGTON, N.C. — The Burlington School senior guard Jamarii Thomas announced his commitment to UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday afternoon.
Thomas had to overcome adversity in order to reach this point. He missed the 2018-19 basketball season when attending High Point Christian Academy following a torn ACL and meniscus. The six-foot, 185-pound guard bounced back from those injuries by averaging 15.6 points, 2.9 assists, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.8 steals a night for Piedmont Classical last winter. The Bobcats would finish 25-9 overall.
As a senior, Thomas is enrolled at The Burlington School and was able to play AAU basketball for Team Curry 17U. That is when Division-I interest started rolling in following many standout performances in various events throughout the summer and early fall.
Eastern Kentucky, NC A&T, Stetson and Winthrop all offered Thomas since Mar. 2020. Smaller schools like Catawba College, Georgia Southwestern State and UNC Pembroke (each are Division-II) extended opportunities to the senior guard as well.
The Burlington School, ranked No. 2 in the latest HighSchoolOT boys basketball poll, sits 8-2 overall with losses against Lake Norman Christian School and Liberty Heights Athletic Institute. The Spartans get 73 points per game as a team and are led by two double-figure scorers
According to MaxPreps, Thomas is averaging 21.3 points and 2.1 steals through nine games for TBS. The recent UNC-Wilmington pledge recorded 30 points in back-to-back games against University Prep Academy and Liberty Heights His teammate Kuluel Mading, a three-star forward by 247Sports.com, committed to Howard University in November. Mading posts 10.4 points and 4.9 rebounds each contest.
The Spartans will be back in action on Thursday night by traveling to No. 15 Cape Fear Christian Academy (7 PM). HighSchoolOT will have coverage from that Top 25 matchup.
