The Burlington School senior wing Ja’Dun Michael announced he has reopened his recruitment after receiving a release from his National Letter of Intent with the Wichita State men’s basketball program.

Michael hinted at the coronavirus pandemic as a reason for his decision.

“Due to everything that is going on in the world, I just don’t feel 100% comfortable traveling so far from home,” he posted in a statement on Twitter.

Michael and TBS coach Ryan Bernardi could not be reached for comment.

“I want to thank (Wichita State) Coach (Gregg) Marshall and the entire staff for welcoming me and believing (in) me enough to allow me to sign to their university,” Michael’s post read. “I love Wichita and Coach Marshall deeply, but unfortunately I will be reopening my recruitment. Coach Marshall did not have to let me out of my NLI but he did and I truly do appreciate him for that.”

Rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports, Michael signed with the Shockers in November and averaged 17 points, four assists and two steals in his final season on the high school level. He’s a two-time Times-News All-Region first-team selection and was twice named to the NCISAA Class 1-A all-state team.

Seven scholarship players from the Shockers’ 2019-20 roster have entered the transfer portal since the cancellation of the season. Two Class of 2020 prospects (including Ricky Council IV from Southern Durham), two junior college transfers and a graduate transfer all announced their intent to join the Wichita State program in the past week.

Michael listed a top seven potential landing spots of Cincinnati, Elon, Louisville, Penn State, Providence, North Carolina State and Wichita State in November before selecting the Shockers.
