Mike Johnston Named Caldwell Academy Varsity Girls Basketball Coach

Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Mike Johnston for the position of Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. Johnston is currently a Sports Medicine and Advanced Fitness Instructor at UNCG Early/Middle College. Prior to that position, Johnston spent 14 years as Associate Athletic Director and Wellness Department Chair at the American Hebrew Academy. In that role, he coached multiple teams including Varsity Boys Basketball, Varsity Girls Basketball, Varsity Boys Soccer, and Varsity Girls Soccer. In 2018-19, Johnston led the American Hebrew Academy basketball team to its highest state ranking ever and its first state tournament win in program history.

"At the Academy, we always had a great rapport with Caldwell, Dan and his staff,” said Johnston. “Our very best girls soccer years were spent competing against Caldwell and our programs indeed set the standard for our conference. I look forward to working with the athletes at Caldwell and creating a great culture for the girls basketball program going forward"

During his coaching tenure at American Hebrew Academy, Johnston coached multiple collegiate, as well as professional athletes. He also won numerous TAC Coach of the Year awards, is a two-time NC Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the Year, and four-time NCSCA Regional Coach of the Year. He has also had coaching stints with Greensboro Day School and Guilford College, in addition to coaching club and Olympic Development soccer. Coach Johnston is a strength and conditioning coach and enjoys active recreational pursuits, and also has worked with several collegiate soccer programs to promote leadership and create positive cultures and environments.

“Mike is a well respected veteran coach,” said Athletic Director Dan Bozarth. “I’ve always appreciated Mike’s ability to get the most out of his teams and the level to which they are prepared. I am excited to see him develop our girls basketball program.”
