With Bradley netting 1,000th career point, setting record, Cannon ousts Providence Day
CHARLOTTE – The Cream of Cabarrus No. 1-ranked Cannon boys basketball team looked a little off during its road game against the Providence Day Chargers, but one quick fourth-quarter run was all the Cougars needed to win, 58-51, on the road Tuesday night.
Jaden Bradley tied a team-high with 18 points, but his sixth point in the third quarter put him over 1,000 points for his career, making him the fastest player in Cannon boys history to accomplish the feat.
In addition, according to a report by rivals.com, the University of North Carolina was in town to see Bradley, who is the No. 1-rated point guard in the class of 2022 by most scouting services
With eight regular-season games left in just his sophomore year, Bradley surpassed the pace set by former Cougar Jairus Hamilton, who wrapped up his career in 2018 No. 2 on the program’s career scoring list with 2,574 points in just three varsity seasons.
Jarell Eddie, a 2010 Cannon graduate who went on to play in the NBA and is currently playing professionally in Spain, is the program’s career scoring leader with 2,602 points.
Tuesday’s win improved the Cougars’ record to 17-5 overall and 3-0 in the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association, moving them into first place in the standings. The Chargers dropped to 10-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
“I thought it was a grind-it-out win,” said Cannon coach Che Roth. “(Providence Day) controlled pace of play, forced really long possessions, really forced us to really guard in the half court.”
Tied at 12 after the first quarter, the Chargers went on a 10-2 run to start the second quarter, led by Michael Zanoni who scored eight straight points.
Soon after, the Cougars went on their own 9-3 run, forcing six turnovers. They trimmed the deficit to just a point and capped off the run when Jarvis Moss got a steal and passed it ahead to D.J. Nix, who dunked the ball just as the buzzer went off.
“I thought early, I don’t know if it was us being lulled to sleep or a combination of their game plan, I didn’t think we played real hard early,” Roth said. “That was uncharacteristic of us.”
The third quarter followed a similar path as the first quarter, with each team trading buckets and neither leading by more than three points.
Up 37-36 in the fourth quarter, the Cougars, specifically Bradley, finally sped up the Chargers’ slow tempo, hit their shots and separated themselves.
Bradley and Moss started the quarter with a back-to-back buckets, and then Moss created a steal and scored on the other end to make it 43-38. Bradley then hit a 3-pointer, a jump shot and another 3-pointer in three straight possessions to make it 51-39.
“We played at their pace in the beginning of the game, but at halftime, we made adjustments to make them speed up to our game, and it created points,” said Bradley, who already has scholarship offers from at least 15 schools, including Wake Forest, Florida State and Tennessee.
The Cougars went a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, not missing their first shot until the 3:12 mark during their 14-3 run.
“We just started to attack,” Roth said. “We quit settling, and we really tried to put a circled peg in a square hole in the first half. We finally took what they gave us.”
That separation was all that Cannon needed, and Providence Day couldn’t get back into the game.
Nix, who rivals.com reported the Tar Heels were also in to see, scored 18 points. Moss added 10 points with three steals and a blocked shot.
