BOYS BASKETBALL: With Nix and Bradley, youth gets served in Cannon’s win over Forsyth Country Day

CONCORD -- Cannon boys coach Che Roth knows that when you’re dealing with a young basketball team, you have to take the bad with the good.
When the good includes fabulous freshman DJ Nix, the bad sure doesn’t look as challenging for Roth.
Nix scored a game-high 38 points to lead the Cougars to an 83-74 victory over Forsyth Country Day School Tuesday in Cannon’s home opener. The win improved the Cougars’ record to an even .500 on the season (2-2).
“I thought we were really good in spots, but I also thought we were young in spots,” Roth said. “Especially on the defensive end.”
Indeed, the Cougars allowed 46 second-half points to the Furies, something Roth was not pleased with.
“I think the pace picked up, and that’s the pace we really want to play,” Roth said. “Knowing that, I’m OK with giving up some points. But I’m not OK giving up 70.”
Nix had his full offensive arsenal on display Tuesday. He grabbed four offensive rebounds, had four assists and a couple of blocks to go along with his near 40-point scoring effort.
“On the offensive end, I thought (Nix) was really good,” Roth said. “I thought he had a little lull there in the second quarter, where his motor wasn’t quite as good. But overall he was good.”
Another superstar freshman, guard Jaden Bradley, scored 16 of his 26 points in the second half for the Cougars, who scored 50 second-half points.
“In the second half, I thought (Bradley) controlled every aspect of the game,” Roth said. “He was much more aggressive in the second half.”
It looked early on like the Cougars would have an easy victory, especially after taking a 10-point lead in the first quarter. But 12 turnovers and a mountain of fouls kept the Furies in the game and, by halftime, the margin was only five points, 33-28, Cannon.
“I think it’s a combination of youth, I think it’s a combination of inexperience,” Roth said of the first-half miscues. “But I also think it’s early (in the season).”
The Furies would take a 48-47 lead with about three minutes left in the third quarter before a 13-2 run opened the Cougars’ lead to 10 points entering the fourth quarter, 60-50.
