Cannon sweeps Wesleyan
By GREER SMITH SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE
HIGH POINT — Undermanned, the Wesleyan Christian boys basketball team couldn’t stay with Cannon School on Tuesday.
Missing two key starters, the Trojans kept pace for a quarter before the Cougars, last season’s NCISAA 4A state champions, pulled away and rolled to a 78-54 victory at Wesleyan.
“We were a little undermanned tonight,” Wesleyan coach C.J. Lee said. “I give the kids who were in uniform a lot of credit for battling at an appropriate level for stretches. We battled for longer stretches than previous games, which we can build upon.
“You can’t give a team as talented as Cannon easy opportunities at the rim and uncontested shots from the perimeter because a talented and well-coached team is going to make you pay for every mistake. They were able to do that and got on that run at the end of the first half and then stretch it out in the third quarter.”
The girls game was much the same as Cannon broke open a close game early in the second quarter and won, 57-41.
BOYS GAME
Wesleyan, which led only at 2-0, was down just one at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 3 at the buzzer and trailed 29-26 with just under 6 minutes when Cannon took control.
The Cougars, taking advantage of Trojans misses and turnover, scored the next eight points on the way to finishing the quarter on a 14-2 run to lead 43-28. Big man Elijoh Ormiston scored six points during the surge and guard Jarvis Moss capped it with two 3s.
Wesleyan stayed relatively even in the third quarter until Cannon closed it with a 10-3 run which included key contributions from Moss and Ormiston.
“Empty possession hurt you,” Lee said. “When you are coming up offensively and not consistently getting stops defensively, leads can grow on you. And then you add in a talented team that’s been in close games already. Hopefully, we can learn to do that to other teams.”
J3 Swindell led the Trojans (2-4) with 16 points and Isaiah Ray added 14. Moss led the Cougars with 23 points. DJ Nix had 18 and Ormiston 17.
“Our kids fought tonight,” Lee said. “The biggest thing right now is we have to get healthy.”
