With one of the top point guards in the area running its offense, the Coastal Christian boys basketball team played a nearly perfect third quarter en route to a 62-52 victory over Trask on Thursday at the CFA Holiday Challenge.
The Centurions made all eight field goals in the period to turn a seven-point halftime lead into an 18-point cushion. The only blemish was a missed free throw from Keshaun Pierce.
"Kamron (Greene) is learning how to be a leader," Coastal Christian coach Craig Wheeler said about his sophomore point guard. "He does a great job of instilling calmness in the team. He gets us in our offense."
Greene scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the opening quarter. His 3-pointer with 1:28 on the clock ignited a 12-0 run that put the Centurions up 17-11. The lead was seven entering halftime.
Coastal Christian (9-5) came out of the locker room with great defensive intensity and turned that into a 9-0 run over the first three minutes of the third quarter. Greene finished off the period with a long assist to Chazz Banks, who beat the buzzer with a layup.
"When we get stops, that feeds our offense," said Greene, who added six assists. "We aren't always going to have great offense, but defense travels with us."
Trask (6-3) closed the deficit to 12 on a 3-pointer from Jaylin Mashack with three minutes remaining in the game, but Greene came right back with a nifty layup to put the game out of reach.
Michael Parker and Tommy Murphy each added 12 points for the Centurions, who shot 52 percent (26 of 50) from the field and 50 percent (5 of 10) from 3-point range.
Tiyuan Ballard scored 11 of his 18 points in the opening half to lead the Titans.
The Centurions, who opened the event with a 51-50 win over South Brunswick on Wednesday, are back in action against West Brunswick at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The Titans take on Cape Fear Academy on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
