Cape Fear Academy 58, Coastal Christian 19
The Hurricanes (15-7, 3-0 Coastal Rivers) played stifling defense and raced past the Centurions (9-11, 1-2) Tuesday with a blowout win. The victory serves as Cape Fear Academy’s first home victory against Coastal Christian since 2014.
The Centurions never scored more than eight points in any of the four quarters, as the Hurricanes’ length both inside and on the perimeter frustrated their opponents throughout the evening.
“I was very impressed,” Cape Fear Academy head coach Tony Martin said. “We take a lot of pride in how we guard, and those guys were committed to that end of the floor. We usually play a lot of defenses, but we didn’t have to change much tonight from our straight man-to-man.”
Emmanuel Bonsu led the way with 17 points for Cape Fear Academy, making all four of his three-pointers. He also grabbed three rebounds and tied Ivan Misic with a game-high three assists.
“I try to prepare myself to have an impact in every game. This game, being a rivalry, I had to show up and just do my thing,” Bonu said.
The Hurricanes assisted on 11 of their 15 made field goals. Georges Lefebvre scored 15 points, while Gavin Guion chipped in eight.
Lefebvre and Guion also provided the two highlights of the night with fastbreak dunks that sent the Cape Fear Academy student section into a frenzy.
With the win, the Hurricanes remain alone in first place in the Coastal Rivers Conference and now have a two-game lead on the field. Two more victories will clinch the outright championship.
