Cary Academy boys, Trinity Academy Raleigh girls pick up basketball wins

The temperature in the 60s outside Trinity Academy of Raleigh’s Founders Hall gym felt like a fall or spring evening. Dr. James Naismith might never have invented his indoor sport in 1891 in this type of winter.
But we all know it is basketball season, so the visiting Cary Academy boys’ and girls’ teams and Trinity met as scheduled Tuesday night for their nonconference doubleheader.
The Cary Academy boys won 50-49 when Tylor Moore hit a driving layup with 8 seconds to play. The Chargers (4-4) had to hold their breath until a shot by Trinity (3-3) at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
In the girls’ game, Cary Academy trailed only 26-20 at halftime, but the Tigers (6-0) pulled away for a 50-24 win over the Chargers (2-6).
Moore finished off Trinity Academy boys
Cary Academy trailed 33-27 at the start of the fourth quarter before Tyler Marshall sparked the comeback that Moore finished.
In the first 68 seconds, Marshall hit a 3-pointer followed by a steal off the press for a layup to trim the deficit 35-32. He added an unusual four-point play in the final minute. He scored and was fouled with 47 seconds to play to cut Trinity’s lead to 47-46. He missed the free throw but charged up the lane for the rebound for a 48-47 edge with 46 seconds remaining.
“We got some scrappy plays from him that made the difference,” Cary coach Mindavgas Timinskas said of Marshall.
Marshall scored all nine of his points in those two fourth-quarter flurries. Michael Fowler led the Chargers with 16 points and Moore added 11.
Trinity sophomore Messiah Pankey scored 24 points, and junior Matt Yager added 14.
“We’re a young team, maybe the youngest in the state,” Trinity coach Bryan Burwell said. “We’re in a learning process and this will help us prepare for conference play.”
