APA boys fall, girls win in EPIC Conference openers

The Knights defeated the Patriots 58-45 Friday in the EPIC Conference opener. Cary Christian (10-3, 1-0) trailed for just 17 seconds in the contest, slowly building up a lead on the way to victory.
Paxton Riley’s 3-pointer with 6:27 remaining in the first put the Patriots (6-4, 0-1) ahead 3-2, but Walker Neal answered with a perimeter shot on the next possession to trigger a 7-0 run. APA shot just 24 percent from the field in the first half and Cary Christian stretched its lead to as many as 13 before heading into the break up 30-21.
The Knights kept the momentum in the third quarter, going on an 11-2 run to start. The Patriots wouldn’t get the advantage under 12 from there as Cary Christian won going away.
“I thought we battled and stayed in the game — there aren’t many teams that can get down double digits and fight back, especially missing a couple pieces (in Noah Miller and Mir Mir Moore),” APA coach Clay Harrell said. “Still, there’s no excuse. We just have to continue to push forward and build.”
Logan Dukes scored 17 points to lead the Knights with Seth Cullen adding 15. For the Patriots, Nick Harrison scored a game-high 19 while Riley added 15, including 10 in the first half.
