Dear FCDS Community:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am writing to inform you of a leadership transition at Forsyth Country Day School. I am pleased to announce that Gardner E. Barrier has been appointed as our incoming Head of School. He will begin his term at FCDS on July 1, 2016 when Dr. Vince Stumpo, the current Head of School, completes his three-year tenure. The Board has unanimously approved the decision to appoint Mr. Barrier.

Gardner comes to FCDS with fifteen years of teaching and leadership positions at independent schools. He served as Assistant Head of School at Westchester Country Day School, a pre-K-12th grade independent school in High Point and currently is the Upper School Director and Assistant Head of School at Summit School.

No stranger to our community, Gardner is an alumnus of FCDS, having attended 8-12th grades, played varsity soccer and baseball, and served as Class Treasurer for three of those years. He earned his MBA at Wake Forest University and his M.Ed. from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Gardner is a lifetime resident of Winston-Salem.

We thank Vince for his commitment to reinforcing the academic rigor of the FCDS educational experience. During his term as Head, the school has progressed in building a national academic reputation, increased the global learning of the students, and explored options to enhance student's character development. Looking back at his tenure, Vince stated, "I am proud of all that we have accomplished together during the last three years. I believe that the school is well-positioned to go proudly into the future. I conclude my tenure at FCDS with a sense of fulfillment and gratitude."

Gardner will build on the academic programs furthered by Vince and brings with him not only academic experience and local knowledge but a familiarity with the FCDS culture. In accepting this appointment as Head of School, Gardner said: "I am deeply honored to be chosen to come back to FCDS as Head of School. I welcome the opportunity to continue the school's rich tradition of integrating strong academics with extra-curricular exploration. I look forward to working alongside the wonderful faculty and staff, to serving the students as they embark on their joyful journey of scholarship, and to getting to know and partner with the parents."

We are pleased to welcome Gardner, his wife Heather, a preschool teacher at Knollwood Baptist, and their two daughters Livy and Maya to the school.

Sincerely,

Rob Showfety,
Chairman, FCDS Board of Trustees
