Davidson Day names new athletic director
July 06, 2021
by Doug Coats

DAVIDSON – Davidson Day has a new athletic director following the successful tenure of Ron Johnson as administrator and coach.
Chris Turner has taken over the Patriots program, effective July 6, after serving in many roles at Forsyth Country Day, but most recently as assistant principal at Bethany Community School in Summerfield, north of Greensboro. He was director of Alumni Relations at Forsyth Country Day and served as the school’s athletic director from 2011 to 2018.
“Throughout the application and interview process, it was clear and evident to me that Davidson Day School is a special community, one which I am thrilled to join,” Turner said in a press release. “The trustees, coaches, parents, administrators and faculty are all engaged, informed and forward thinking. Their enthusiasm for Davidson Day and the role athletics plays here is refreshing.”
Turner arrives following a three-year run under Johnson that saw six NCISAA state championships, including one from his boys basketball team in 2020. It was his second stint at the school, previously as basketball coach and dean of students from 2009-12. Johnson is now the boys basketball coach and program director at Providence Day.
From 2008-11, Turner was the assistant director of the FCD Upper School and dean of Upper School students. He won two state championships as boys and girls soccer coach and was named N.C. Soccer Coaches Association Coach of the Year numerous times.
“Chris brings a wealth of experience in administrative and athletic roles, and the five coaches on our search committee unanimously recommended him as our next athletic director,” Head of School Pete Moore said in the release. “His long-standing commitment to athletic and academic excellence, combined with his skill and passion for program-building, is precisely what we sought in our next athletic director.”
Davidson Day is currently seeking a new boys basketball coach.
