Halvorsen, Greenies win pivotal CAA game

ASHEVILLE – Carolina Day was heating up Tuesday night with a late comeback.

They was only one hitch – No. 11 for Christ School is pretty automatic at all times.

Western Carolina University recruit Matt Halvorsen scored 10 of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter and was 6-for-6 from the foul line to clinch a 63-59 road win.

Halvorsen’s first three field goals were from three-point range. The Greenies (16-7, 4-1) never trailed in avenging a rare Carolinas Athletic Association loss. Will Fleming backed up Halvorsen with 15 points and Justice Ajogbor had 11.

The Greenies were tripped up 77-73, at home nonetheless, by the Wildcats (11-8, 2-2) back on Dec. 9. Christ School led wire-to-wire in Tuesday's rematch, witnessed by a standing-room only crowd inside the Nash Athletic Center.

“I thought our guys did a great job in dictating this game tonight,” Greenies basketball coach Scott Willard said.

“(Carolina Day) had to come to us. They had to chase us.”

Indeed, Christ School was ahead 17-8 after the first quarter, 27-21 at halftime and 40-34 after the third.

Tai Giger sank four 3-pointers during the fourth-quarter rally for Carolina Day, including one which made the score 61-59 with 10 seconds to go. But the Greenies were able to inbound the ball to Halvorsen who put the game away.

Giger matched Halvorsen with 19 points – including 16 over the closing eight minutes. Peyton Truesdale gave Carolina Day 13 points and Raishaun Brown contributed 10.

"Our kids played extremely hard. I'm proud of the effort," Wildcats coach Trip Cogburn said.

"And the support from our community was great tonight. We got off to a really tought start. Once we settled in, the game was almost even for the last 28 minutes. But give Christ School a ton of credit, we kept coming at them and they kept answering."

Christ School only has 24 hours to savor things. The Greenies are home Wednesday against Asheville Christian Academy (7-13, 2-2) before turning around and hosting national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy (Va.) on Friday.
