Christ School's Navy Shuler picks App State football out of 11 college offers
ARDEN - Christ School's rising senior quarterback Navy Shuler has ended his search for a college football home.
Shuler, who became the first WNC quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season during his junior year, announced his commitment to Appalachian State in a social media post on July 4.
"I really like the ability the coaches (at Appalachian State) have in developing quarterbacks. That was a big deal for me," Shuler said. "They also have the No. 1 fan base in North Carolina. It's going to be really exciting to play in front of that crowd."
Shuler is the son of former congressman and NFL quarterback Heath Shuler, who was a Heisman Trophy runner-up at the University of Tennessee. He works as a volunteer assistant coach at Christ School.
"He had a lot of options, but I'm very proud of him for picking a school with great coaching and a great tradition," Heath Shuler said. "As a parent, and for our extended family, it's also a relief to know we'll have the opportunity to go watch him play."
Navy Shuler chose App State over 10 other Division I offers that included Memphis, Coastal Carolina, Southern Mississippi, Duke, UNC Charlotte, Temple, Tulane, Brown, Wake Forest and Liberty.
"It's nice to take a breath of fresh air," he said. "I'm relieved that its over, but I'm excited for the journey I'll have in college. Now I'm ready to focus on this upcoming season and winning a state championship."
