ARDEN – Christ School soccer is giving “homefield advantage” a bad name.

The Greenies are Western North Carolina’s last undefeated team in the sport with a 7-0-4 overall record and 3-0-0 mark in the Carolinas Athletic Conference.

Just four of those games have been played on campus. And there are only two more scheduled home games – Rabun Gap, (Ga.) on Sept. 29 and Asheville Christian Academy on Oct. 1 – before the end of the regular season, which comes Oct. 23.

“These guys really don’t care where the game is being played,” Christ School coach Guy Campbell said.

“I can’t say enough about this group of seniors that we have. It’s a special group and most of them are local guys. They’ve taken their lumps in the past and they’ve all gotten better.”

Campbell is a 2000 Christ School graduate now in his fifth season as coach at his alma mater.

The Greenies are ranked fourth in the latest N.C. Soccer Coaches Association poll for NCISAA 3-A. And they have every starter back from last year’s 9-5-5 team.

Cal Jansen (eight goals, four assists), Young Perry (seven goals) and Devon Johnson (three assists) are some of the team’s offensive leaders. Goalkeeper Will Iorio has recorded three shutouts.

Campbell's seven-man senior class includes Jansen, Johnson, Perry, Fabrice Dallies, Liam McCann, Wade Mouer and Lot Turner. Johnson holds scholarship offers from Appalachian State and Wofford.

Locally, Christ School has dipped outside the NCISAA with a 4-3 victory at Enka on Aug. 24 and a 2-2 tie at Asheville High on Sept. 14. The next scheduled game is Friday at Greensboro Day (8-3-2).

The Greenies typically play their soccer in afternoon hours since there are no lights for their home field. But the ACA game on Oct. 1 will be special. Campbell said the school has rented temporary lights for the occasion and that the originally-scheduled kickoff time of 4:30 p.m. has been bumped to 7.
