Ingles Athlete of the Week: Ethan Rose
Karrigan Monk
Asheville Citizen Times
Name: Ethan Rose
Sports: Soccer and baseball
School: Christ School
Year: Sophomore
Positions: Soccer: Striker and center, Baseball: Pitcher and outfield
What was the first sport you played, and how did you get into it?
The first sport I ever played was baseball. My dad encouraged my two younger brothers and me to play baseball when we were younger. My dad grew up playing baseball and wanted us to as well. Soccer was my secondary sport at first. I still play both sports now, on the varsity teams at Christ School and on showcase travel teams.
Tell me about your favorite movie.
My favorite movie is “Gladiator.” It’s about a war general who is wrongly accused of treason. His family is killed, and he is taken to be a slave. He becomes a gladiator and, spoiler alert, ultimately kills the emperor of Rome, who was the person responsible for his imprisonment and abuse.
Who is someone in sports you look up to as a role model?
A person I look up to is Coach Jonny Wangrin. He is my high school soccer coach at Christ School and he also coached me this summer during the intense nine-week Asheville City Academy men’s soccer program, which he built from the ground up. He was a D1 soccer player at the University of West Virginia before a knee injury derailed his career. I look up to him because he expects perfection out of his players but will also help you get better when you falter. Everything that he tells us to do is something that he would do when he was playing.
What’s your idea of a perfect day?
A perfect day for me would be waking up late in the morning, do some kind of work out, then either read a book or play some video games. Family dinner would also have to be on the schedule.
Do you have a pregame routine?
I don’t really have a pregame routine, but I usually don’t talk to anyone until I get on the field. I guess that counts.
Do you have any hidden talents?
-I don’t think I have any hidden talents. One thing that might surprise people, though, is that I have earned the Headmaster’s High Honor Roll (weighted GPA average of 4.0 or higher) every semester here at Christ School. So maybe a hidden academic talent?
