Football, other athletic teams in one league create ‘bubble’ amid coronavirus pandemic

In order to keep its programs safe amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association teams have agreed to form a “CISAA bubble.”
Charlotte Latin, Charlotte Christian, Charlotte Country Day and Providence Day will only play against each other in football. Cannon and Covenant Day will join those four for junior varsity and middle school games.
In each bubble, all member schools have committed to similar health, safety and hygiene protocols, including coronavirus screenings and temperature checks.
No fans will be allowed at games.
For cross-country, field hockey, girls golf, boys soccer, girls tennis and volleyball, a “competition bubble” was formed between Cannon, Charlotte Christian, Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin, Covenant Day and Providence Day on the varsity, JV and middle school levels. Holy Trinity School will compete at the middle school level.
A few teams began play last week, but the area’s largest schools, those in the CISAA, start in full Monday.
A CISAA conference soccer rivalry game between Charlotte Christian and Charlotte Latin starts at 5 p.m. Monday.
High school football will begin the week of Sept. 28. CISAA schedules have not yet been released, nor has the state association determined if it will hold state championships.
