The Centurions (5-4) outscored the Screaming Eagles (0-3) 24-11 in the second quarter and that run proved to be the difference in Coastal Christian’s second victory over a Wilmington public school this season.
“This is the first time we’ve ever beaten Ashley on their floor,” said Coastal Christian head coach Craig Wheeler. “That’s just another step for us as a program, and hopefully a confidence-builder moving forward.”
Skylar Davies posted 19 points, with 12 coming in the first half, to lead the Centurions. Keshaun Pierce scored 17, and both Pierce and Davies were at the heart of Coastal Christian’s second-quarter spurt. However, the team credited its big run to a group effort on the defensive end.
“Defense is everything,” Davies said. “It’s what pushes the offense. We want to get stops and then push it up.”
Ashley’s Mikai Stanley led all scorers with 23 points. He was the only Screaming Eagle to make more than one field goal in the second half.
Thursday was the first game for Coastal Christian without Chazz Banks, who suffered a hand injury Tuesday against Parrott Academy.
“We’re just trying to figure out who we are again,” Wheeler said. “I thought some younger guys stepped up tonight, and we’re going to need those kinds of performances more often. But I think it was good to come out and get a win in this first game without Chazz.”
