From staff reports

Greenfield School varsity boys basketball coach Rob Salter didn’t mince words when it came to the impact Knights guard Coby White had in Saturday night’s game against visiting 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference rival Wayne Country Day.

“He completely carried us and made plays when we had to have plays made,” Salter said of the 6-foot-4 sophomore, who scored 45 points to help Greenfield win 77-76.

White, who came within a point of tying his school single-game scoring record that he set earlier this year, was 14 of 18 from the floor for a sizzling 77.8 percent. Three of those were from 3-point range and he added 11 rebounds and six assists as the Knights climbed to 16-12 overall and 3-1 in the CPIC.

This was the third time this season that White, who is averaging 32 points per game, has reached the 40-point plateau.

But Salter pointed out that White missed eight of his 22 free-throw attempts as he was unable to escape the malady that plagued all the Knights. Greenfield, which turned a 34-30 halftime deficit into a 61-49 lead after three quarters, nearly gave away the game at the line.

“We were terrible from the free-throw line which gave them a chance to hang around and stay in the game,” Salter said.

The Knights made just 15 of 29 and missed eight in the fourth quarter, including two in the final 10 seconds when they were clinging to a one-point lead. However, the Chargers (13-12, 1-3 CPIC) misfired on what would have been a game-winning buzzerbeater from 3-point range.

White had 19 of Greenfield’s 31 points in the third quarter when they surged ahead by as many as 14 points.

“We knew we didn’t play very well in the first half and we wanted to come out strong in the third quarter,” Salter said.

White was complemented by senior twin brothers Jake and Luke Taylor with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Jamal King’s 28 points led the Chargers, who are coached by Salter’s former Greenfield assistant and former Community Christian head coach, David Flowers.

“I’ll give Wayne credit; they kept battling,” Salter said.

The Knights, who posted a big win Friday over Fayetteville Trinity Christian, will host CPIC leader Fayetteville Freedom Christian on Tuesday. The Patriots handed Greenfield its only league loss.
