CCS gets first varsity football win

From staff reports

RALEIGH — The Community Christian School eight-player varsity football team could finally celebrate a piece of history Friday night.

Buoyed by a 329-yard rushing performance on the ground, the Cyclones swirled to a commanding halftime lead en route to a 58-13 victory over Raleigh Grace Christian.

“I was real pleased with the way we played,” CCS head coach Andy Jackson said. “I thought we competed real well. We had a lot of kids play a whole lot different than they playd last year.

Junior Ricky Fuller ran for just 117 yards on five carries, including a pair of scoring runs. Sophomore Avery Winstead had eight carries for 88 yards and a score, while senior Bryson Barefoot added 60 yards on eight carries with a TD. Junior quarterback Grant Webb scored twice, compiling 6 rushed for 56 yards.

Webb completed 4 of 5 passes for 64 yards, including a 10-yard TD strike to sophomore Austin Conway.

CCS carried a 58-6 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Defensively, sophomore Avery Winstead had nine tackles and a forced fumble, including a 30-yard fumble return. Junior Christian Butler added eight tackles. Senior Spensir Heath and junior Cameron Achilles tallied interceptions.

CCS plays host to Cary Christian next Friday in its home opener.
