CONCORD – This season, the cfa Academy boys basketball team has high hopes for winning a state championship.

So far, judging from the way the Eagles are playing, there’s no reason to believe that’s not an attainable achievement.

cfa Academy, which competes for the private-school 23A state title, nudged its record to 23-3 and continued its unbeaten record against other 3A teams. Carmel Christian slipped to 18-5 overall.

Three cfa Academy players registered “double-doubles.” Senior forward Cheick Traore collected 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Trae Benham tallied 15 points and10 rebounds. And fellow guard Isaac Boothe had 12 points and10 assists.

Carmel Christian was led by Elijah Gray’s 13 points. Senior forward Kenny Gwynn Jr., a former player at Northwest Cabarrus who’s one of Carmel Christian’s top players, scored two points Friday.
