Matthews-based Covenant Day School will add football next fall.
The first football team will be for boys in grades 7-9 and will play a modified schedule.
“We have had excellent participation at our fall 2015 combines and are excited about the momentum we are building for the addition of football,” interim coach David Houseton said.
Last Friday, Covenant Day had a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new 2,200-foot Fitness Center on campus. It includes state-of-the-art weight equipment. In addition, the school plans to add 14 sports by the end of the 2016-17 school year. Last year, Covenant Day joined the CISAA conference -- which includes Charlotte Latin, Country Day, Charlotte Christian, Cannon School and Providence Day -- and added boys lacrosse. Covenant Day has more than 300 students in the high school and about 70 percent of them play at least one sport.
