Chargers compete in Adidas XC Challenge

CARY — With a goal to finish in front of more public schools than behind, the Wilson Christian boys cross-country team turned in a roughly mid-pack performance, finishing 10th out of 19 teams in the Challenge Division at Saturday’s Adidas XC Challenge held at WakeMed Soccer Park.
With three divisions in play — Championship, Invitational and Challenge, the Chargers were slotted in the Challenge division and finished ahead of three North Carolina High School Athletic Association programs in South Lenoir (11th), Raleigh Sanderson (12th) and Richlands (19th). Programs topped from the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association included The O’Neal School, Raleigh Ravenscroft, Voyager Academy, Sanford Grace Christian, St. Thomas More Academy and Woods Charter.
Junior Seth Trull led the way for Wilson Christian, finishing 28th in the 180-runner field with a time of 18:12.5, beating his previous personal best by 31 seconds and the first in two years. Following for Wilson Christian among its top five scoring runners were sophomore Lin Scott (31st, 18:20.7), eighth grader Conner Ford (41st, 18:56). sophomore Brett Walston (114th, 21:22.6) and junior Mark Price (141st, 22:27.3), a transfer from East Wake Academy.
Durham Academy won the boys Challenge Division with a team score of 51, while Jedaiah Ruhl of the Cary Home Educators won the event in a time of 16:01.2.
In the girls race, the shorthanded Lady Chargers avoided the last-place position with their team score of 469. WCA was 17th out of 18 teams while missing the services of top runner Holland Miller due to a softball camp.
WCA instead counted the showings of seventh grader Charlie Kate Barnett (101st, 28:58). eighth grader Savannah Owens (108th, 29:26), seventh grader Micah Thompson (120th, 31:20.8), sophomore Ava Zander (127th, 32:38.2) and seventh grader Leighton Trull (132nd, 36:03).
Margaret Ann Healy of Durham School for the Arts won the girls event in 20:20.9.
Wilson Christian travels to Wayne Country Day on Monday.
