Raiders top Colts

The Southern Vance boys’ basketball team came out on top with a 64-60 win over Crossroads Christian School on Monday. This was the first time in the history of the teams that these two have met on the hardwood.

“I was excited that we got the chance to get them on the schedule for both the boys and the girls,” Crossroads head coach Joseph Cooper said of the matchup. “To play a school that is much larger than ours and to play a team that is much bigger than ours is beneficial to us as a team.”

Coming into the game, there was not only uncertainty because of the new matchup, but there were also some expectations.

“I checked some scores, and I knew that they were pretty close to Franklinton, and when you have Jeremiah (Green) on your team, somebody who can go off for thirty on any given night then it’s going to be a close game,” Southern Vance head coach Greg Ackles said.

In the first quarter Southern Vance was able to hold their own outscoring the Colts 12-2.

Moving into the second quarter, the Colts were able to get out of their scoring rut and prove that they were able to contest with Southern Vance with the help of Jeremiah Green, who scored 11 of the team’s 20 points in the first half.

“We kind of woke up a little bit; we looked like we were asleep in the beginning,” Cooper said.

The Raiders went into the locker room at the half with a 25-20 lead over the Colts.

“At halftime, I was more frustrated that we missed so many layups; the game plan wasn’t the issue,” Ackles said. “We were attacking the basket, which I was pleased with, but we just missed too many layups.”

Coming back onto the court, Southern Vance claimed the first points of the half but were unable to shake the Colts. With a 1:26 left in the third quarter, the Colts were able to tie the game up at 36-36.

The contest continued to go back and forth until the two teams were tied up at 41-41 going into the fourth quarter.

Things began to heat up as both teams desperately attempted to break each new tie that was set in a back and forth contest. In the last minute, the Raiders made a three-pointer off a missed free throw and then made an additional two-pointer to clinch their 64-60 victory over the Colts.

“We needed one stop that we weren’t able to get and one rebound that we weren’t able to get,” Cooper said. “Credit Southern: They went after the ball, they had two guys there, and their two guys just wanted it more than we did.”

In the victory Marcus Harrison, a freshman at Southern Vance, led the team with a total of 23 points and four assists on the night.

“He hit the two threes late, and they were both very good, under control threes so I am very pleased with him up to this point so far,” Ackles said.

Southern Vance’s Justus Baldwin also had a big night, recording 16 points on the night.

Crossroad’s Green led the Colts, with 16 points total in the loss.
