KVA women defeats CCS despite inconsistent first half

HENDERSON — Kerr-Vance Academy’s girls basketball team easily defeated Crossroads Christian on Thursday evening by a score of 39-9, but head coach Marcus Foster said that his team’s performance during the game was far from its best.
“It’s hard to really sum up what happened,” Foster said. “This was an ugly win, but we’ll take it. We need any kind of boost that we can get right now.”
Both KVA and Crossroads struggled to generate any offense during the first quarter until the Spartans finally started knocking shots down in the closing minutes, which gave them an 11-4 advantage over CCS.
The game’s slow pace reached a trough in the second quarter, as KVA was limited to just four points and Crossroads failed to register a single basket. CCS would not score again until the fourth quarter, but the Colts could not keep KVA away from the basket after the Spartans found more consistency in the second half.
Despite losing by 30 points, Crossroads interim head coach Cammy Simmons believed her players put together one of their best games of the 2020-21 season, which she attributed to better ball movement, solid defense and leadership from her senior class.
“I’m very proud of the way the girls played,” Simmons said. “We started the game very strong and they played very well together in the first half. I told my three seniors that this was the last time they would play KVA in basketball and they went down fighting tonight, so I have to give them a lot of credit.”
Foster believed that his players came out too confident and relaxed in the first quarter after previously defeating CCS 38-5 on Jan. 14, but he said a strong second half showcased the potential KVA has when everything is executed correctly.
“We’re looking for growth and leadership right now,” Foster said. “Everyone has to keep working hard. Our goal was to finish the week 3-0, and we ended up losing one of those games to Rocky Mount Academy by six, which is the best team in the conference. This week was good, but we have to get better each and every day.”
KVA will face Pungo Christian Academy at home on Monday next week at 4:45 p.m., while CCS will travel to Lee Christian on the same day at 6:30 p.m.
