HENDERSON — WIZS radio’s Trey Snide will trade in his headphones for a baseball cap in just a few short weeks when he officially starts his tenure as the new head coach of the Crossroads Christian Colts.

Snide saw the potential in the Colts throughout the entire 2019 season, and is confident the talent embedded within the program, combined with a positive culture, will result in a successful first year at CCS.

“I can’t thank Crossroads Christian and Scottie Richardson enough for giving me this chance,” Snide said. “The kids that have come out to our practices have been outstanding. They’re welcoming and they’re ecstatic, and when players are enthusiastic about playing, it makes everybody more excited to be out there.”

Snide has always possessed a strong passion for baseball and its history within the United States, but he said his love for the game intensified during his time playing with the Clayton Comets in high school as he could observe the immersive baseball culture prevalent in the community.

When given a chance, Snide enjoys discussing the inner workings of baseball and all of the top players and teams currently in the MLB, whether it is over the air at WIZS or with anyone in Henderson or the surrounding areas.

“It’s the little things that I enjoy,” Snide said. “It takes everybody to win in baseball and you have to work as a team. It takes the second baseman and the shortstop, along with the pitcher and the catcher to communicate, and that communication is a beautiful thing.”

One of these conversations with CCS athletic director Scottie Richardson led to a discussion about the varsity baseball team at the school. That eventually resulted in Richardson reaching out to Snide about becoming the head coach of the program, a position he eagerly accepted.

Richardson said Snide’s knowledge for baseball and his positive outlook made him an ideal fit to lead the varsity team, but he added that the work Snide has put in to preparing his players in recent weeks should make them a contender to win in every single game.

“Even if I had much more time on my hands, I couldn’t have found a better coach,” Richardson said. “He has taken the bull by the horns by starting workouts before the Christmas break, so the team is definitely going to be prepared for the season, and as an athletic director, that’s all you can ask for.”

Although Snide’s past head coaching positions include leading football at Dillard Drive Middle School and track at Lees-McRae College, he doesn’t anticipate having any issues transitioning into high school baseball with experience and a solid rapport with his team.

Snide will be inheriting a program that endured numerous struggles throughout 2019, though it managed to advance to the NCISAA Mid-Carolina Conference championship game against The Burlington School, there incurring a decisive 13-3 loss.

While Snide expects some growing pains during his first year, he believes the young talent on the Colts and the months of practice his players have already gone through will allow them to eclipse their 3-6 record from 2019 and earn another visit to the Mid-Carolina Conference championship.

He doesn’t want to speculate on the team’s potential season-finishing record, but he believes the players have the sort of confidence and chemistry prevalent in winning teams and is looking forward to seeing how they do on the baseball field.

“I don’t like to look into expectations too much since we are a young team,” Snide said. “I can promise that we are not going to be a team that gets overlooked. We are going to go out there and do the little things right. If we can do that, then the game of baseball will come extremely easy.”

Snide, along with his assistant coaches in Wes Collier and Robin Capps, will continue to observe and evaluate their players into February before the Colts season- and home-opener on March 3 against Cresset Christian Academy.
